Journalism Types

There are various types of journalism. Each type adds up to the general concept of what makes up journalism overall. It all combines together to create participatory media.

Over the years due to the increase in people sharing information, news companies took to creating websites that feed off of citizen journalism. An example is ohmynews.com. it is one of the biggest news websites in South Korea, and the main source of information comes from citizen journalists.

Journalism transformed from being one way to being two way. Meaning that before journalism was focused on people sending out information. Now people are both senders and receivers of information.

It is important for all media students, especially people considering a journalism career to know the different types. By knowing the types one can learn how to utilize each potential article they will come across to their benefit. They will also be able to differentiate between credibility.

The five main types of journalism today are: traditional journalism, online journalism, civic journalism, and citizen journalism, and human rights journalism.

Each description overlaps the other, and some categories have minor differences. The future of journalism depends on the evolution of each type. It is also a wonder how the “gatekeepers” or “watchdogs” of news will continue to manage the distribution of news throughout the world.

TRADITIONAL JOURNALISM

Traditional journalism is the occupation of writing, editing, publishing a magazine or Newspaper. It is the gathering of information of a news Network. The Occupation of Selling Newspapers that publish favorable views that the general public want to hear about. Forecasting your network to the interest of the Majority of the Media will be your audience.

ONLINE JOURNALISM

This branch of the industry makes use of the democratic right, i.e., freedom of speech. Here, the citizens are involved in gathering news wherein they speak out their problems and give opinions. This information is used by the journalists to create new stories and present it to the world.

CITIZEN JOURNALISM

This is a type of journalism where the people make their contribution to the news. They can share facts, give suggestions, and also say what they feel about that particular event. Even after the news has been published, it is open for people to add their comments and suggestions. This method is mostly used by journalists for sensitive issues so that the citizen gets a chance to speak and another news can made with that information. People can also bring to notice issues that may have been missed by media houses.

HUMAN RIGHTS JOURNALISM

H.R. Journalism is a combination between traditional and citizen topics. It covers topics relating to human rights.

Journalism is a way in which people are able to share and receive information. The different types include Traditional, online, civic, citizen, and human resources. Online journalism was a way of changing the medium from print to the Internet. People now have access to various editions of journalism through online sources. Civic journalism introduced the code of ethics. However it was not complete because there was no authority figure to stay behind all of the journalists. Citizen journalism consists of everyday people who post things or write. This includes bloggers, twitter users, and all other people who post things for the public. Finally there is human rights journalism. Human rights journalism is a combination of traditional journalism and citizen journalism topics. The topics they both cover are aimed towards the rights of the people; therefore human rights journalism was created.
